Source-separated urine contains a large amount of nutrients, such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, which can be both resources and pollutants. This article describes the characteristics of the source-separated urine, summarizes the technology for nutrient recovery from the source-separated urine, summarizes the effects of urine on crop growth, and clarifies the main effects of utilization of human urine on soil physicochemical characteristics and drug accumulation. Finally, the prospects for the agricultural utilization of sourceseparated urine as a substitute for chemical fertilizers are identified, which would provide a research direction for the return of human urine as liquid fertilizer.
