Iron(hydr)oxides and humic substances(HS)are important natural active substances and ubiquitous in soils. Owing to their much larger specific surface area and a greater variety of active functional groups such as -COOH and -OH, the specific interactions of heavy metal ions adsorbing on the surface of iron(hydr)oxides and HS can easily occur through electrostatic and ligand exchange, which affects transport, transformation and biological effects of heavy metal ions. Understanding the mechanism of micro-interfacial interaction between heavy metal ions and iron(hydr)oxide-HS complex is of great importance to clarify the transport and transformation of heavy metal ions in the environment. In this review, the mechanisms and models about the adsorption of metal ions on natural active substances were summarized. These advances would provide an important theoretical basis for risk assessment and control of heavy metals in contaminated soils.
