| Abstract: |
| To clarify the effects of polyethylene(PE)microplastics on bentonite adsorption of ammonia nitrogen(NH4+), sequential batch adsorption experiments were conducted using both single-component and composite systems. Combined with modern spectroscopic analysis methods, the adsorption of NH4+ by bentonite, microplastics, and bentonite+microplastics systems, along with their underlying mechanisms, were investigated. Results indicate: Bentonite exhibits a saturated adsorption capacity of 3.52 mg·g-1 for NH4+. Its adsorption isotherm follows the Freundlich model, indicating multilayer adsorption. NH4+ adsorption capacity increases initially then decreases with rising pH. Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions compete with NH4+ for adsorption sites, reducing bentonite's NH4+ adsorption capacity. Adding microplastics decreases bentonite's NH4+ adsorption. FTIR and SEM analyses indicate that microplastics covering bentonite surfaces reduce NH4+ adsorption sites. In summary, microplastics inhibit bentonite's NH4+ adsorption. |
