Abstract: |
Recent studies have shown that biochar has potential to improve soil fertility and carbon sequestration. However, the effect of biochar on nitrogen transformation is poorly understood. The present study was carried out to determine the effect of corn stalk biochar(produced at 300 ℃ and 600 ℃) on urea-N hydrolysis. In a sterilization experiment, we examined urea hydrolysis rates, inorganic nitrogen accumulation and ammonia volatilization in soil amended with biochar. In biochar treatments, urea hydrolysis was accelerated, and it was complete in 2 days, one day earlier than in CK. More ammonia was volatized as a result of increased soil pH induced by biochar application, and more NH4+-N was accumulated. After 12 days of incubation, available nitrogen content was lower in biochar treatments than in CK, indicating that inorganic nitrogen might be partially immobilized. |
