Effects of phosphogypsum addition on carbon fractions and humus quality during composting

Abstract:
      This aim of this research was to study the efficient utilization of phosphogypsum and to investigate the effects of phosphogypsum addition on carbon fractions and humus quality during chicken manure and corn stalk composting. The chicken manure was mixed with corn stalk and further amended with phosphogypsum at 0% (CK), 10% (PG10%), and 20% (PG20%)in dry weight of organic materials before being composted for 24 days. Results showed that the CK, PG10%, and PG20% treatments resulted in mature compost, which meets the compost sanitation requirements. PG10% extended the high-temperature processing times by 2 days. Compared to CK, both the treatments of PG10% and PG20% significantly reduced the total organic carbon (TOC), water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC), humus carbon (HSC), humic acid carbon (HA-C), and fulvic acid carbon (FA-C)contents. PG10% increased TOC, WOSC, HS-C, HA-C, and FA-C significantly by 4.50%, 51.79%, 14.52%, 16.99%, and 8.22%, respectively, when compared to those with PG20%. Compared to CK, PG10% increased the humification index (HI), humification ratio (HR), percentage of humic acid (PHA), and degree of polymerization (DP)by 3.44%, 1.08%, 2.36% and 8.70%, respectively. In conclusion, phosphogypsum (10%)could enhance the humification process and improve the humus quality.
