Abstract:
Sewage irrigation has caused heavy metal pollution in suburban soils. In this study, samples of Oenanthe javanica DC. and its rhizosphere soils were collected from vegetable farms irrigated with wastewater in the suburbs of Yichang in 2014. The content of heavy metals(Cu, Pb and Cd) in plants and soils was determined. Single quality index and complex quality index were used to evaluate heavy metal pollution in both plant and soil, and the Target Hazard Quotient(THQ) was employed to assess the health risk of O. javanica for local inhabitants through food chain transfer. The concentrations of Cu and Pb in soil samples were lower than the Environmental Quality Standard for Soils(GB 15618—1995). However, Cd concentrations in soils exceeded the Standard, which was at medium-heavy pollution levels. The heavy meals in all O. javanica samples did exceed their respective limits specified in Safety Qualification for Agricultural Product—Safety Requirements for Non-environmental Pollution Vegetable(GB 18406.1—2001), and were at alert level or slight pollution level. The daily intakes(DI) of Cu, Pb, and Cd via consumption of O. javanica from wastewater irrigated soils were 1456, 127, and 99 μg·d-1 for adults and 1118, 97, and 76 μg·d-1 for children, respectively. The THQ values of Cd for both adults and children living in this area were higher than 1, indicating the potential health risk of O. javanica from these areas. Our results suggested that it is imperative to control the pollution of heavy metals in sewage irrigated area.
